Wien 1945. Der Zweite Weltkrieg ist zu Ende. Freddy Wolff und Georges Adler, österreichischer und deutscher Herkunft, sind in die USA emigriert und nun Soldaten in der amerikanischen Armee. Wien ist zerstört und in vier Besatzungszonen aufgeteilt. Die Stadt wird vom Schwarzmarkt beherrscht. Österreich nimmt sich als unschuldiges Opfer des Nationalsozialismus wahr und verweigert jegliche Aufarbeitung. Die Bevölkerung passt sich mehr schlecht als recht an das neue System an. Freddy lehnt jedoch die allgemeine Heuchelei ab und leidet an seiner Liebe für die junge Schauspielerin Claudia.
In the conclusion of Axel Corti’s trilogy (following God Does Not Believe In Us Anymore and Santa Fe) Freddy, a Viennese Jew who emigrated to New York after Hitler’s invasion, and Adler, a left-wing intellectual originally from Berlin, return to Austria in 1944 as soldiers in the U.S. Army. Freddy falls in love with the daughter of a Nazi, and Adler attempts to go over to the Communist Zone. But with the advent of the Cold War and continuing anti-semitism, the idealism of both characters is shattered as they find themselves surrounded by cynicism, opportunism, and universal self-deception. This acclaimed, brilliant work is one of the great films of all time.

A la fin de l’année 1938, Vienne est occupée par les nazis. Ferry Tobler, un adolescent juif, est le témoin de scènes d’antisémitisme dans la rue. De retour chez lui, il constate que son père s’est suicidé. Il décide de fuir. En quête d’un visa pour les Etats-Unis, il se rend au consulat, où il fait la connaissance de Gandhi, un officier allemand antinazi. En compagnie d’Alena, une jeune femme, ils vont devoir traverser l’Europe en guerre pour gagner leur liberté…
Partie 2 : Santa Fe (1985-1h58)
New York, en 1940. Le « Tonka » accoste avec, à son bord, nombre de réfugiés fuyant le nazisme. Parmi eux, Ferry Tobler, un adolescent juif autrichien embarqué à Marseille, et Freddy Wolff, l’un de ses compatriotes. Freddy trouve un emploi dans un magasin de « Delicatessen » tenu par un ancien médecin…
Partie 3 : Wohin und zurück / Welcome in Vienna (1986-2h01)
Noël 1944, en Alsace. Adler et Freddy, deux Juifs, l’un Allemand, l’autre Autrichien, engagés dans un régiment américain, roulent vers l’Autriche. Ils se retrouvent à Salzbourg (mai 1945), puis à Vienne (septembre 1945), et découvrent la réalité autrichienne au lendemain de la guerre.
