Postman tells the Decalogue-like story of Xiao Dou, an introverted young postal worker who is suddenly promoted from installing mail boxes to delivering letters. The old postman he replaced, he learns, was arrested for stealing mail. Before long Xiao Dou too is intercepting and reading other peole’s letters, becoming privy to their secrets… and trying to intervene in their lives. He comes to know a woman sucked into prostitution when her singing career stalled, a gay junkie cut up over his lover’s AIDS-related death, and an elderly couple unaware that their son has decided to commit suicide. Meanwhile Xiao Dou’s relationship with his own sister begins to shift from emotional intimacy to sexual intimicay…
