In Göschenen, at the foot of the Gotthard, industrialization has long since taken hold and the former alpine farmers now work in offices and factories. In the Schächtental, on the other hand, a traditional family-centric mountain economy still survives. And while in the village of Bristen in the Maderanertal, a traditional farming community still exists, several hundred of the village’s inhabitants nonetheless leave the area every day to go to work or to school.
