A young man, Gabriel Fouquet, arrives in a coastal town in Normandy to visit his daughter, who is staying in a boarding school. He ends up lodging in a guesthouse run by the aged Albert Quentin and his wife Suzanne. To forget his troubles, Gabriel hits the bottle, not realising that the teetotal Albert was once a heavy drinker. Twenty years ago, the latter pledged never to touch alcohol again if he and his wife survived the war. Through his friendship with Gabriel, Albert becomes nostalgic about his past, recalling his time as a sailor on an expedition to China. To drown their sorrows, the two men embark on a drinking binge which quickly gets out of hand…

En juin 1944, Albert Quentin, ancien fusilier-marin en Indochine, tient, avec sa femme Suzanne, l’hôtel Stella dans le village de Tigreville, sur la côte normande. Il se laisse souvent aller à trop boire, ce qui le porte à la nostalgie de ses séjours en Chine. Lors d’un bombardement, il promet à Suzanne de ne plus boire si l’hôtel échappe à la destruction ; promesse tenue. Quinze ans plus tard, débarque Gabriel Fouquet, publicitaire. Il boit pour effacer l’échec de sa vie sentimentale, « voyager » en Espagne et rêver de tauromachie. Il vient voir sa fille Marie qui vit dans un pensionnat de Tigreville. Les deux hommes, qui n’ont pas « le vin petit ni la cuite mesquine », vont connaître deux jours d’évasion grâce à l’ivresse, l’un en Espagne et l’autre en Chine ; l’apothéose étant un feu d’artifice « dantesque » sur la plage. Puis chacun retournera à sa vie d’avant.
