Directed by Kim Yong Kyun (Red Shoes), costume epic The Sword With No Name (a.k.a. Like Fireworks, Like Butterflies) revolves around a fated love in the Joseon court during the late nineteenth century.
Appearing in his last film before military service, Cho Seung Woo stars as a bounty hunter who gives his life to serving and loving Empress Myeongseong, played by the beautiful Soo Ae (Sunny). The consort of Emperor Gojong, Empress Myeongseong is remembered in Korean history as a national heroine, who was actively involved in politics and diplomacy and sought to modernize Korea and resist Japanese imperialism. Mixing history, fiction, and action, The Sword With No Name reimagines the reign and struggles of Empress Myeongseong, through her relationship with Cho Seung Woo’s fictional royal guard. Headhunter Moo Myeong (Cho Seung Woo) lives day to day catching fugitives, but his life is forever changed when he meets and falls in love with maiden Ja Yeong (Soo Ae). Tapped to be the next queen of Joseon, Ja Yeong enters the palace a few years later, and lovesick Moo Myeong follows. He joins the royal guard to protect her, staying loyally by her side as she navigates court politics and rises to the throne to become the Empress of Joseon.
