The first to die in an outbreak of meningitis in Vera Cruz is a French tourist. His wife Nellie, detached and indifferent, feels very little despair and understands that her coldness is her very own doom. On the following two days, she’s drawn to George, a neighborhood drunk who does odd jobs for brothels and dances grotesquely for vacationers in exchange for beverages. George has his own dark secret, a catastrophe that he caused he leaves him having a death wish. In helping the local physician to handle the outbreak, these two psychological cripples enable one another to rediscover motives to live and also to appreciate.
