The Land Unknown (1957)

On a naval expedition to Antarctica, three men and reporter Maggie Hathaway crash-land in a crater 1000 m below sea level. There, they encounter steamy tropical forest, dinosaurs, carnivorous plants, and human footprints, as Maggie’s clothes become more and more abbreviated.

Long before the Jurassic Park movies, Universal made this excellent low budget movie.

An expedition to the South Pole by helicopter ends up in a deep crater in the frozen wastes after colliding with a pterodactyl. At the bottom of the crater they discover a land unchanged since prehistoric times.

Dinosaurs roaming this land include a T-Rex, a plesiosaur and enlarged lizards which for a change are not stock footage from One Million BC (1940). Other dangers include man-eating plants and a man who has been living in a cave there for 10 years after another expedition went wrong.

In the end, the helicopter is repaired and all escape, including the man who was there for 10 years.

This movie stars former Tarzan actor Jock Mahoney who plays a good part. The special effects are good as is the music.

I found this movie very enjoyable and is worth seeing.
