The young woman, Nina, works as a singer at a Copenhagen variety, but when her contract expires, she is suddenly without an income for herself and her old mother. When she sees an ad in the newspaper looking for singers for a theater in St. Petersburg, Nina strikes – a few weeks later she leaves. It turns out, however, that she has been tricked and she ends up in a notorious brothel instead. She fears that all hope is gone, but at the same time her sailor friend goes ashore and set sails to find his Nina.
