It was made on a shoestring budget by Christine Dall and Randall Conrad, who didn’t really need a penny more… The film watches [Sally’s] rapprochement with her child, her settling into a shabby apartment near Boston and her confused friendship with a husband who is greatly relieved to learn that she doesn’t really want much from him. All of this is presented with energy and verisimilitude (‘This is gonna suck out all that dirt just like a vacuum cleaner,’ she says encouragingly while at beauty school, to the woman to whom she’s trying to administer a facial)…Mr Conrad and Miss Dall place an interesting heroine against a vivid social backdrop, thus accomplishing more than many costlier films manage to do.
