Honeymooning at Hungary, Joan and Peter Allison discuss their train compartment with Dr. Vitus Verdegast, a courtly but awful guy who’s returning to the stays of this town he defended prior to getting a prisoner of war for fifteen decades. If their hotel-bound bus crashes at a mountain storm and Joan is injured, the vacationers seek refuge in the house, constructed fortress-like upon the website of a bloody battlefield, of celebrated architect Hjalmar Poelzig. There, cat-phobic Verdegast finds his wife’s fate, grieves for his missing daughter, and has to play a game of chess for Allison’s life.
