Back in 1985, in Communist Romania, the twelve year old Irene falls deeply in love with a German, Franz. When Franz renders Romania, Irene decides to accompany him to Berlin to be with him. Following her birth, Irene slowly comes to understand that Franz no more wishes to be with her.
