Paris Blues (Martin Ritt, 1961)
Ram Bowen and Eddie Cook are two expatriate jazz musicians living in Paris where, unlike the US at the time, Jazz musicians are celebrated and racism is a non-issue. If they meet and fall in love with two young American women, Lillian and Connie, that are vacationing in France, Ram and Eddie have to choose whether they ought to return to the US together, or remain in Paris for the freedom it permits them. Ram, who would like to be a significant composer, finds Paris too arousing and is unwilling to give up his songs for a connection, and Eddie would like to remain for the city’s more conducive racial atmosphere.
