A series of unexplainable accidents befall the people and companies responsible for developing the world’s first supersonic airliner (SST1). A British agent is sent to investigate and with the help of another agent uncovers a plot masterminded by Carl Petersen who stands to gain eight million pounds if the aircraft is not ready by a certain date. The evil Petersen has developed a number of “robots” (actually rather beautiful girls with “electronic brains”) to help him sabotage the SST1 project by means of “infrasound” (extreme low frequency sound waves) which can be directed at people or objects with devastating results.

Headline serves as a vehicle for handsome David Farrar, who in 1943 was Britain’s fastest-rising leading man. Farrar is cast as Broogle, a crime reporter who’ll do anything-ANYTHING-for a story. Pepe Le Moko leads a gang of jewel thieves in the Casbah of Algiers, where he has exiled himself to escape imprisonment in his native France. Hangmen Also Die is the story of Heydrich’s assassination in fictionalized form. In Paris, the shy bureaucrat Trelkovsky rents an old apartment without bathroom where the previous tenant, the Egyptologist Simone Choule, committed suicide. The unfriendly concierge (Shelley Winters) and the tough landlord Mr. Zy establish stringent rules of behavior and Trelkovsky feels ridden by his neighbors. Meanwhile he visits Simone in the hospital and befriends her girlfriend Stella. After the death of Simone, Trelkovsky feels obsessed for her and believes his landlord and neighbors are plotting a scheme to force him to also commit suicide.
