On a chilly winter Sunday, the pastor of a tiny African American church (Tomas Ericsson) performs support for a very small congregation; however he’s dealing with a cold and a serious crisis of faith. Following the ceremony, he tries to console a fisherman (Jonas Persson) who’s tormented by nervousness, however, Tomas can simply talk about his own troubled relationship with God. A college instructor (Maerta Lundberg) gives Tomas her love because consolation for his lack of faith. However, Tomas resists her love just as urgently as she provides him. This is the next in Bergman’s trilogy of movies dealing with man’s relationship with God.
