Pola performs in a circus double act of music and clowning with her husband Lorio. Following an injury sustained during his benefit performance, Lorio is unable to continue working at the circus and the pair scrape a hand-to-mouth existence as buskers. This where they come to the attention of the wealthy merchant Prakhov, or at least Pola does. Tired of the glamorless and impoverished existence that her husband has plunged them into, will Pola succumb to Prakhov’s advances? Should Prakhov’s infatuation prove fleeting, what then?
