Meoto zenzai AKA Marital Relations (1955)
Ryukichi, the young master of a cosmetic wholesale dealer, leaves his wife and child to live with Choko, a popular geisha, with whom he has fallen in love. As a result, he is disowned by his father. For the sake of Ryukichi, who knows no trade by which he can support the two, Choko has to remain working as a geisha. Ryukichi, however, cannot break himself of his play-boy habits and spends Choko’s savings, which she had intended to use as capital to start a business. Ryukichi’s wife dies several months later, but he is still not forgiven by his father. An adopted son is chosen to succeed the family inheritance, and Ryukichi who had hoped some time to return to his home is left desolate and crestfallen. Choko who still loves him and is true to him continues to work as hard as ever without any other thought but to make him brace up and stand on his own feet. Ryukichi and Choko open a small restaurant by borrowing money from Ryukichi’s sister and Choko’s remaining savings. However, Ryukichi becomes ill and they have to sell the restaurant to pay the hospital expenses. In the midst of this misfortune, Choko’s one hope was to obtain permission from Ryukichi’s father, even at his death-bed, to become husband and wife. With this one hope she had endured all hardships with no complaint. When Ryukichi’s father dies, all her hopes were dashed, and she was even refused to attend the funeral. In utter despair, Choko attempts to commit suicide, but fails in the attempt. Ryukichi gives up all hope to return to his house and determines to remain with Choko. Although rejected for their illicit bond, Ryukichi and Choko cling together by need, the unbreakable ties of love, and devotion.
