For twelve long years, Anna Christiansen heard nothing from or about her husband Klaus, a seaman. So as to provide a secure living for her three sons, Anna took over a home for retired sailors. Since doing so, she has led a modest, but satisfying life. Suddenly, one day, Klaus arrives. He looks spent, dilapidated and run down – a man, who has apparently wasted his life in harbor bars and cheap brothels. Anna is determined that her children do not discover that this is the man she always told them about: decent and hardworking.
