Martin and Lea (1979) Alain Cavalier, Isabelle Ho, Xavier Saint-Macary, Cécile Le Bailly

The day after their first meeting, Léa and Martin wake up together, soon joined by Viviane, a friend of Léa who lives in an apartment provided by Lucien. In exchange, Léa introduces him to carefree young women like Viviane. Martin, passionate about classical singing, pays for his lessons by working in a factory. Disturbed by Léa’s indifference, Martin insists on seeing her again. His persistence, and the new possibilities he embodies, eventually move her. Yet Martin cannot accept Lucien’s presence, nor Léa’s role as his go-between. He urges her to choose another life, without offering much in return. She refuses, and they part. He tries to end things with a letter, but regrets it immediately. Unable to let go, he moves into Léa’s home uninvited. She reacts violently and leaves to live with her father, a modest Indochinese craftsman. Meanwhile, Martin witnesses a meeting between Lucien and Viviane. After a quarrel, Viviane realizes the truth of her situation and takes her own life with gas in the kitchen. Léa, devastated and feeling responsible, is deeply shaken. But this tragedy breaks with the past. From then on, Léa and Martin rediscover one another in the simplicity of love. They marry and await their first child.
