Frédéri, a country boy and gardener, madly in love with a young woman from the city of Arles, discreetly meets his sweetheart under the arcades of the arena. In the city, people gossip about these encounters, for the Arlesian girl is no longer an innocent: Mitifio has been her lover for two years and comes to inform Frédéri’s family, who are already talking about marriage. Upon learning the news, Rose warns her son Frédéri of this setback, telling him that the Arlesian girl is nothing but a hussy. Frédéri becomes melancholic and sad, finding no solution. His mother asks Vivette, a very pretty young woman he has known since childhood and who secretly loves him, to confess her love for Frédéri.
