Marco, giovane attore di una compagnia teatrale itinerante per le province romane, nonostante sia innamorato della figlia del capocomico, Laura, si lascia attrarre dal mondo del cinema e lascia i suoi compagni, in cerca di fortuna a Roma. Dopo alterne fortune ed alcuni compromessi, con un’impresaria e una diva hollywoodiana, per cercare di ritagliarsi il posto in una importante produzione, spinto dall’amore per Laura, decide di fare ritorno alla sua vecchia vita.
