Knut Hamsun is Norway’s most famous and respected writer. Ever since he was young he’s despised the English because of the starvation that they caused Norway through WWI. After the Germans occupy Norway on April 9, 1940, he welcomes them along with the protection they could supply from Great Britain. He affirms the federal socialist beliefs, but opposes how these ideals have been turned into actions – which Norwegians are imprisoned and implemented. His wife Marie journeys in Germany throughout the war as a Indication of support from Knut as well as himself.
