Fortunella (1958) Eduardo De Filippo, Giulietta Masina, Alberto Sordi, Paul Douglas

Nanda Diotallevi, called Fortunella, is a poor girl living in the second-hand dealers district, and is the lover of one of these, Peppino. For him she went to prison, taking upon herself the blame for his receiving stolen goods, but when released, she finds out that Peppino is living with another woman, Amelia. After a scene she leaves the scoundrel.
In her troubled existence Fortunella is supported by an illusion, which is her reason for life: she believes’s to be the illegitimate daughter of Prince Guidobaldi, whose palace is located right in her neighborhood.
One day Fortunella meets Golfiero, a vagabond professor, who takes an interest in her story and promises his help. He and the girl join a company of strolling players who play in a large tent on the Tiber banks, but his impetuosity messes up the representation. Fortunella reunites with Peppino, but shortly after learns that Golfiero is hospitalized; the vagabond professor soon dies and leaves a ruined cottage in inheritance to Fortunella. Prince Guidobaldi, who was bound by friendship to Golfiero and is his executor, summons Fortunella at the palace…
