Film Without A Name / Film ohne Titel (1948) Rudolf Jugert, Hans Söhnker, Hildegard Knef, Irene von Meyendorff

Jugert’s “film without title” features an elaborate script by Helmut Käutner about a screenwriter, a director and a star (Willy Fritsch) who try to conceive a story of its time and heavily disagree. When a couple visits them, the director tells them about a love story in the final days of the Third Reich and the time afterwards, he an upper class man of letters she a peasent girl working as maid.

The interspersed comments finally escalate when the director confesses not to know how their story ended which prompts the screenwriter to create a stylish rubble film finish while Fritsch creates an alternative ending full of saccharine. In the end they ask the couple who provide a third ending, the director is still scpetical though and ends the film saying that he couldn’t even imagine a title for this story.
A very literate meditation on filmmaking, but also to a large part a witty love story where Irene von Meyendorff plays the third woman with the elegance of a screwball comedienne, those who know her from the Harlan films will be surprised. Fritsch’s willingness to lampoon his image and the films he represented is also pretty generous. All told one of the must sees of the era.
