In many respects a stylistic prototype for his masterpiece Salome, the film marks a move aware from real locations towards the baroque artifice of his later works. Starting in high contrast monochrome, the film then explodes into a vividly coloured phantasmagoria. Mixing frenzied editing, hyperkinetic camera work and all manner of optical effects, the film is astonishing on myriad levels.
