Aux États-Unis, dans les années 1970. Alice est une femme au foyer de 35 ans, malheureuse en ménage : son mari est indifférent envers elle et irascible avec leur fils d’une dizaine d’années. Il meurt subitement, et la vie d’Alice prend un nouveau cours. Elle part avec son fils vers son rêve de petite fille, devenir chanteuse à Monterrey en Californie. Mais quelques désillusions l’attendent…
