In postwar Vienna, fate brings together a petty crook working under the table as a taxi driver and a famous concert pianist. The pianist’s wife tries to escape their loveless marriage by getting an old friend to take her out of the country but the pianist kills him in a taxi. The crook/taxi driver tries to use the dead friend’s passport (which also requires impersonating him) to escape to America. Complications ensue.
