Margit is a single mother in her mid-thirties with two daughters by different men. Looking back on her failed relationships, Margit realizes that her life has been shaped by perceived social expectations and that she has always allowed the men in her life to choose her. Although she is already romantically involved with a woman, a newly liberated Margit decides to win the affections of a male colleague, as lover and a father for her children. Her amorous pursuit not only serves as an entertaining love story, but is a testament to the evolving independence of East German women.
