In June of the first year of the Genji era, the Shinsengumi launched a raid on the Ikedaya Inn, where anti-shogunate activists had gathered. Following the Hamaguri Gate Incident, the shogunate ordered an expedition against Choshu, but Shogun Tokugawa Iemochi showed no sign of coming to Kyoto, and an uneasy atmosphere permeated the city. Kondo Isami resolved to maintain order to the best of his ability with the Shinsengumi.
