At the end of nineteenth century Russia, Prince Nechljudoff, on the verge of contracting a marriage of convenience, leads a superficial and mundane life. He is appointed juror in the trial of a woman he recognizes as Katjuschka, whom he once seduced and abandoned after making her pregnant.
