In the base of the melancholy, Tom’s mom was out of work for weeks when Ed’s dad loses his job. Not to burden their parents, both high school sophomore’s choose to jump the freights and try to find work. Wherever they go, there are a number of different kids like them, so Tom, Ed and Sally adhere together. They camp in areas like’Sewer City’ so long as they could before the regional government run off them. They travel throughout the west and if they reach New York, Ed believes they might eventually find work.
