Schattenland – Reise nach Masuren (2005) Volker Koepp

The ‘shadowland’ Koepp travels through in this film is Masuria (Polish: Mazury, German: Masuren) in the north east of Poland, formerly a part of East Prussia. Famous for its many lakes as well as its forests, it is only sparsely populated and still one of the poorest regions in Europe in spite of its tourism. Koepp seeks out people that live away from the tourist centres and seem stranded here such as the many Ukranians that were forced to resettle in Masuria after the Second World War. With farming no longer sustaining them, they make a living in ways that some prefer to keep a secret. The region’s many lakes provide another important, yet equally meagre source of income. In order to barely survive, the fishermen have to go out on the lakes all year around even in freezing temperatures. Whereas traditional ways of making a living prove increasingly insufficient, tourism seems to promise a better life and has for example attraced a young Polish couple who have invested in restoring old houses to rent out to tourists. For others, like three students from Warsaw, Masuria offers the chance to live a different life, a life free of commerce. For them Masuria is ‘the end of the world’ and a place of magic.
