The ‘shadowland’ Koepp travels through in this film is Masuria (Polish: Mazury, German: Masuren) in the north east of Poland, formerly a part of East Prussia. Famous for its many lakes as well as its forests, it is only sparsely populated and still one of the poorest regions in Europe in spite of its tourism. Koepp seeks out people that live away from the tourist centres and seem stranded here such as the many Ukranians that were forced to resettle in Masuria after the Second World War.
