A Borrowed Life (1994) Nien-Jen Wu, Akio Chen, Jun Fu, Yung-Feng Lee, Drama

Sega, a Taiwanese born in the years of Japanese rule, felt nearer to Western nationality and culture compared to Mainland Chinese government who took over in 1945. The Japanese led to the evolution of the island along with its own social infrastructure, leaving behind popular and efficient schooling and health-care systems. Unexpectedly, Wen-Jian is average of these sons born into Sega’s generation. Born and raised under Chinese authorities, their normal allegiance would be to Chinese civilization. They’re mystified by and horrified by using their parents’ fondness for Western rule and culture, their bafflement intensified by all they’re educated about Japanese imperialist aspirations and wartime atrocities. Tjos os a generational conundrum with no solution, doubtless unique to Taiwan.
