A fairly Chinese girl, looking for assistance from San Francisco detective James Lee Wong, is killed with a poisoned dart in his entrance hallway, having time simply to scrawl”Captain J” on a sheet of newspaper. She proves to be Princess Lin Hwa, on a secret military assignment for Chinese forces battling with the Japanese invasion. Mr. Wong finds two captains together with all the intial J in the situation, neither being what he appears; there is fog on the waterfront and someone has that poison-dart gun…
