Mine owner George Perez, transporting a load of uranium, is ambushed and left for dead after a fall over a cliff. Badly hurt, he makes his way to town doctor Frank Harding (Leo Cleary), secretly the boss of the outlaw gang working with a foreign government to steal the uranium,who poisons him and passes his death off as the result of an accident. The mine passes into the hands of rancher/businessman Craig Bennett, who makes a claim for the Uranium loss and the company sends Roy Rogers (Roy Rogers) to investigate. He comes to Coronado posing as a cowhand looking for work and gets a job as a member of a line crew that includes Foy Willing (Foy Willing) and the Riders of the Purple Sage(Darol Rice, Al Sloey and George Bamby)working for Bennett’s Coronado Power and Light Company. Roy also runs into an old friend, Sparrow Biffle (Pat Brady), who is a helper to Bennett’s secretary Pam Reynolds (Dale Evans.)

Roy Rogers, a highway engineer, strongly favors a youth-rehabilitation camp sponsored by retired State Prison Warden Parker where young first-offenders can be reformed without being exposed to penitentiary life. Andrew Willard, through whose range a new highway is being built, is being secretly robbed of his pure-bred cattle by his crooked foreman Devery who has marketed the cattle and replaced them with scrub stock.He then has the herd stampeded into a landslide set off by dynamite by Roy’s young crew to make them appear responsible for the loss of the “valuable” cattle. Roy takes the blame and is ordered off of the property by Willard, over the protests of his niece June. Then Devery has two of his men, whom he has planted on the guest ranch ran by Splinters McGonigle, steal a diamond brooch belonging to Mrs. Edsel and the blame is placed on one of the work camp boys, Jim Corley. Helping out the Sheriff, Roy brings in a suspect. He identifies him as a wanted man but the outlaw escapes with Roy as a hostage. Roy is taken to the gang leader’s house where another hijacking is being planned. They also plan to get rid of Roy.

In the Arizona Territory in 1879, Captain Jeff Stanton takes command of a cavalry unit tasked with returning the Apaches to their reservation. The Mescaleros Apaches, led by chief Victorio, have left the reservation and openly attacked farmers,gold miners and settlers who trespassed on their lands. During a skirmish, Captain Stanton captures Red Hawk, the son of the chief, and uses him to bargain for a truce.Stanton promises to chief Victorio to see that gold miners and settlers are kept off Indian lands.However, some greedy townsfolk and disfranchised gold miners plot to break the uneasy truce.They murder the Indian agent and blame the Apaches.They complain to Washington D.C. about Captain Stanton’s negotiated truce.Stanton is replaced by Colonel Perry who intends to use a heavy hand in subduing the Apaches.The consequence of this strategy change proves disastrous.

In 1868 Arizona the Apaches led by Cochise are on a warpath and U.S. Army Captain Bruce Coburn is tasked with protecting settlers on their way to Apache Wells. A group of undisciplined soldiers, led by corporal Bodine, make Coburn’s task more difficult. When they’re sent after a shipment of repeating rifles Bodine and four others steal the weapons and desert. Captain Coburn manages to return to Apache Wells where he vows to capture Bodine and his fellow deserters. Meanwhile, Bodine mets Cochise to negotiate the sale of the stolen repeating rifles without knowing that Captain Coburn has recovered the stolen weapons and has killed the other deserters. Cochise and Bodine chase after Captain Coburn in an attempt to recuperate the rifles which both the Apaches and the settlers need in order to prevail. A race against time ensues.
