Violet and her two cohorts attempt to help their “less-fortunate” students at Seven Oaks College – primarily by running a Suicide Prevention Centre and offering their off-beat advice whenever they get a chance. Violet’s newest rescue is transfer student, Lily, and Violet wants to teach her how to talk and dress properly, and how to select appropriate men to be interested in. Along their way in helping everybody at the college, the damsels teach the fraternity doofi to hit the books, they get their hearts broken, but then attempt to start an international dance craze.

The Last Days of Disco, from director Whit Stillman, is a cleverly comic look at the early 1980s Manhattan party scene from the vantage point of the late nineties. At the center of the film’s roundelay of revelers are the icy Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale) and the demure Alice (Chloë Sevigny), by day toiling as publishing house assistants and by night looking for romance and entertainment at a Studio 54–like club. Brimming with Stillman’s trademark dry humor, The Last Days of Disco is an affectionate yet unsentimental look at the end of an era.

“The Last Days of Disco” follows a group of newly minted adults in the New York of the early 1980s. They’re affluent, and recent products of Ivy League educations but they really don’t have much of a clue as to what adulthood is all about. They’re groping, but they’re not sure for what. They all have jobs, but their lives revolve around a posh disco where they mate, mingle, and talk. There’s not much of a plot; “The Last Days of Disco” is mostly a series of conversions. But the conversions are wonderful. Whit Stillman’s dialogue is a delight; he nails what its like during those first years of adulthood when the life of the group is replaced by a mature individuality. The ensemble cast is wonderful to watch, not overplaying their characters. I recommend this movie very highly
