On an archaeological dig in Asia, Dr. Roger Bentley finds a cuneiform tablet referring to an ancient society, the Shadow Dynasty, that was destroyed. An earthquake soon after reveals an ancient artifact and the scientists discover the ruins of an ancient temple world on a remote mountain site. It leads them to an underground world, lost in time, where people have adapted to low light. The High Priest Elinu doesn’t welcome the presence of the new arrivals and wants them eliminated.

As the Mongols invade Baghdad in 1258 the Caliph escapes the city and heads to Basra with his young son, Ali. The Mongols catch the Caliph and he is killed but his son evades capture. In the desert Ali finds the hideout of the only resistance force, the forty thieves, and he joins them and grows up as one of them. Meanwhile his betrothed, the fair daughter of Prince Kasim, is taken to Baghdad by her father to be married to the Mongol leader, Hulago Khan. Ali goes to Baghdad and captures her but soon sets her free. She learns that he is her betrothed as well as the leader of the band of thieves. Her wedding to the Khan is set for Ramadan and so Ali Baba and his band of thieves attend the celebrations parading as traders. A great fight ensues and the Khan is killed, Baghdad is freed and Ali and his princess live happily ever after.

On a naval expedition to Antarctica, three men and reporter Maggie Hathaway crash-land in a crater 1000 m below sea level. There, they encounter steamy tropical forest, dinosaurs, carnivorous plants, and human footprints, as Maggie’s clothes become more and more abbreviated.

Long before the Jurassic Park movies, Universal made this excellent low budget movie.

An expedition to the South Pole by helicopter ends up in a deep crater in the frozen wastes after colliding with a pterodactyl. At the bottom of the crater they discover a land unchanged since prehistoric times.

Dinosaurs roaming this land include a T-Rex, a plesiosaur and enlarged lizards which for a change are not stock footage from One Million BC (1940). Other dangers include man-eating plants and a man who has been living in a cave there for 10 years after another expedition went wrong.

In the end, the helicopter is repaired and all escape, including the man who was there for 10 years.

This movie stars former Tarzan actor Jock Mahoney who plays a good part. The special effects are good as is the music.

I found this movie very enjoyable and is worth seeing.
