The Morgan family’s patriarch is soon to die. He hosts a dinner party for the family to tell them all he’s setting aside his last will to be opened by his nearly 8-year-old granddaughter thirteen years in the future when she turns twenty-one. Thirteen years later, she returns to the abandoned family house to open the will, per his instructions. Murder follows shortly thereafter. Police Lt. Burke and Private Investigator Johnny Smith are soon on hand to investigate when guests of the old dinner party thirteen years earlier seem to be bumped off according to the past seating arrangement.

Vic Armstrong arrives at his Uncle Judge Armstrong’s home just in time to answer the telephone. Unknown to him, his uncle has just been murdered and the culprit is right there in the room with him! Phyllis Powers, on the other end of the line, recognizes Vic’s voice, but just then Vic is knocked unconscious by the murderer. When he awakens, he (for reasons known only to movie mystery writers) pulls the knife out of his uncle’s back, thus putting his fingerprints all over it, and just in time for the police, having been called by a worried Phyllis, to discover him standing over the body. Well, we know he didn’t do it, but the police don’t agree. Can Charlie Chan recognize the boy’s innocence, and find the real murderer before Vic is sent into durance vile, or even worse?

Peggy Rooney, Yvonne Brewster, and Marie Lewis are models at Madame Celeste’s fashion house, Madame Celeste who is only the front for the business’ true designer and owner, her ex-husband, Jacques Duval. There is disharmony at the fashion house, as Yvonne is trying to steal Peggy’s boyfriend, Jimmy O’Brien, Madame Celeste’s stock clerk and driver. Jimmy O’Brien (Robert Lowery)and Sammy Rubin (Sidney Miller), write jingle commercials for radio, and meet Mary Adams (Dona Drake), who wants to break into radio as a soloist for a band. The pair take a recording of Tommy Taylor’s band and make a a record with Mary doing the vocal. Through an error, 10,000 pressings are made and released through the record company owned by J.P. O’Hara (Tim Ryan). Taylor (Jerry Cooper) has always refused to have a girl singer, and through his agent Herman Strohbach (Robert Kent)threatens to sue Jimmy.
