A classical ballad motif about an aging father and his three daughters is quite unusually here set against the backdrop of Czechoslovakia of the 1950s. After having been expropriated, the former landowner Majda seeks refuge with his three daughters whom he had sent to a convent a long time ago. But only the youngest one is able to forgive him and she is willing to take care of him despite the threat of expulsion from the order.

Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko resurfaces after a hiatus with this potent drama about Pavel (Josef Matus) an independent young man who defies the conventional wisdom. Pictures of the Old World is an unquestioned masterpiece of European documentary cinema, with existential radicalism that offers a contrast to the shallowness of hundreds of other documentary films showing images from the outskirts of civilization. The outskirts here are a Slovakian town in the Tatra Mountains. Though censored for 17 years, Dusan Hanáks poetic visual essay is not a political or even social film. One of the gems of the czechoslovak new wave. Impressionism on a film screen inspired by Maupassant’s Mouchette. The film reminds works of Luis Bunuel in depicting of a lifestyle of boheme culture as if it was wholly normal way of living and thus gives us an impression of an enjoyable moral disturbance. The film has added to Maupassant’s story also the other side of the life in fun – life in a city, life in a poverty. The images which are shown here are very similar to the works of impressionists of this time – Monet’s horizontal compositions with a river, grass banks and summer sky, figural motives as are in works of Edgar Degas and acts of August Renoir.
