In 1939, Sakura Nishi is a young army nurse who is sent to the field hospitals in China during the Sino-Japanese war. She has to assist the surgeon Dr. Okabe with an incredible number of amputations. In the crowded wards, she gives sympathy to some of the soldiers, including sexually servicing one who has lost both arms and has no hope of returning home. She falls in love with Dr. Okabe, and follows him to the front, even though he is impotent from his morphine addiction.

The moment he’s released from prison, the honorable gangster Miyamoto recovers the stolen diamonds he had stashed before getting pinched. When he returns to his haunt to make good by friend who took a bullet for him, he is diverted by the greedy boss Oyane and his insatiable taste for Miyamoto’s precious stones. Replete with film noir style, “Underworld Beauty” is one of Suzuki’s best nods to the American gangster genre.

This early Suzuki entry in the crime genre, set in post-war Tokyo, is as interesting as its premise. Different people trying to recover a set of diamonds from the stomach of a dead guy. And like the McGuffin around which the pulpy story revolves (the diamonds), Underworld Beauty is every bit as beautiful.

Despite sharing many similarities in look and tone with American 40’s film noirs, Suzuki here opts for a more subtle approach, infused with black comedy and sweet irony. With great performances from the cast (especially the younger sister of the dead man) and a tight, gripping story, what elevates Underworld Beauty further above standard fare is Suzuki’s imaginative camera-work and b/w cinematography. The exterior shots of Tokyo capture the mood of the times, alternating between seedy roads and rundown neighborhoods to hip joints where American sailors are hitting on Japanese girls. Suzuki already had an eye for composition and framing which he would go on to develop later in his career, but here he’s happy enough to implement it in the service of a pulpy genre picture.

Like many of the top directors of all time (from Leone to Wilder and Hitchcock), he was able to do genre pictures on studio demand yet instill his personal vision to make what started out as routine affairs into small pieces of art. Underworld Beauty is just that. A rough gem that will especially appeal to film noir fans.

On August 15, ten years after the Pacific War, five people meet at a station. Their purpose is to dig out a cache of morphine — now worth sixty million yen — that HASHIMOTO, an army medical officer, buried in an air-raid shelter in this city on the day the war ended. The five are: SHIMA, a beautiful woman who claims that she is HASHIMOTO’s younger sister and that her brother is dead; NAKADA, a pharmacist; ONUMA, who owns a Chinese restaurant; YAMAMOTO, a thug; and SAWAI, who says he is a junior high school teacher. But HASHIMOTO originally had only three accomplices — and hid the morphine late at night, so they did not know each other’s identities. There is one person too many in the group, but they do not know whom. A butcher shop now stands over the old air-raid shelter. The five decide to rent a vacant house across the street, and dig a tunnel to the butcher shop.
