Reporter Curt Devlin loves sob sister Ellen Garfield but believes women are “bum newspapermen”. When she learns the identity of a murdered arsonist, he calls it luck. When she goes after the murderer he gets enough evidence to have Maitland Coulter arrested. She finds a bunch of “not guilty” ballots and publishes the wrong story; he eavesdrops on the jury and gets the correct verdict. After being fired she gets a confession from the real killer and gets Coulter released.

Conroy, a playboy, is found shot to death in his penthouse. A ne’er-do-well named Ramon Delgado (Paul Marion) tells the Falcon, Michael Watling (John Calvert), that he committed the murder and asks the Falcon to keep a key for him until after he has been acquitted. He says he feels certain of an acquittal when the police learn that the motive for the killing was Conroy’s attention to Delgado’s wife, Margot (Rochelle Hudson). Tom Mallon (Theodore von Eltz) enters the case as Delgado’s attorney, but after Delgado is found poisoned in his jail cell, the Falcon suspects Mallon of killing his own client.

This Republic murder mystery starts with a radio broadcast by Greg Sherman who solves cases on the air that the local police cannot solve. As he names the perpetrator of a recent murder we see the criminal, who is listening to the show, become alarmed and start to make his escape. The scene shifts to the police department where the chief, fearing for his job, assigns officers to get something, anything, on Sherman and get him off the air. Meanwhile, Greg and his pretty wife Beth are parting company. He’s going to a party and she’s going to visit her pregnant sister in the hospital. The next morning Greg wakes up and nudges his sleeping wife. When she doesn’t respond, he pulls off the covers and finds not his wife but a strange woman, dead and with the murder knife still sticking up out of her back. While he’s still recovering from the shock, Beth walks into the bedroom. Thinking that she has discovered her husband with another woman, she leaves and calls the police.
