A Scream in the Dark (1943)

Newspaper reporter turned detective Mike, along with his partner Eddie Tough (who used to be his photographer on the paper), and Mike’s girlfriend Joan go after some business. She’s the daughter of the local police chief, so she can send him clients, is the idea.. The first case he gets is a domestic investigation. Leo Stark’s wife, Muriel has left him for another guy, Gerald Messenger, a man who looks like an ex-pug. Mike finds her, and Messenger, in an apartment, Eddie takes a photograph of them clutching each-other, and she agrees to give Stark a divorce, and ten thousand dollars. While celebrating at a restaurant, Mike is interrupted by a man, Mr. Norton, who claims that Muriel is really his wife. Mike establishes that Norton had married her two years past, while Stark says he married her five years before. But Norton isn’t interested in getting rid of any legal tie with her, he wants her back. Mike agrees to take the job. While he’s trying to find her, Norton gets a phone call.

Cow Country (1953)

A “big” western by Allied Artists standards, Cow Country is directed with his usual panache by horse-opera expert Lesley Selander. Adapted from a novel by Curtis Bishop, the film stars Edmond O’Brien as Ben Anthony, an adventurer-for-hire who casts his lot with Texas cattleman Walt Garnet (Robert H. Barrat). The villains want to drive Anthony and his fellow ranchers off their land, but Ben’s six-guns prevent this, at least temporarily. Meanwhile, Linda Garnet (Helen Westcott), Walt’s daughter and the fiancee of the film’s chief bad guy Harry Odell (Bob Lowery), aligns herself with Ben when Odell proves to be spectacularly unfaithful with saloon chirp Melba Sykes (Peggie Castle). Barton MacLane rounds out the cast in one of his standard loud, abrasive roles.

Beck receives a number of veiled threats and warnings, and then is almost killed by an accident on deck. The initial entry in the Pine-Thomas series based on the “Big Town” radio series finds Steve Wilson as a newly-hired managing editor brought on board to liven up “The Illustrated Press” newspaper. He runs into problems with two of the paper’s star reporters, Lorelei Kilbourne and Pete Ryan, when his aggressive demands that they employ a yellow journalism type of reporting to build circulation, and they both resign to work for another newspaper. Wilson begins to realize that while his type of journalism does build circulation, it has also brought ruin and disgrace to some innocent victims. Lorelei and Pete are brought back by Wilson with his promise that “The Illustrated Press” will become a crusader against evil.
