The realities of life are harsh in Padre Cruz, a slum on the edge of Lisbon, and its inhabitants struggle with violence and poverty. The life in a decrepit Portuguese suburb through the story of a family attempting to transcend its hardships. Middle aged Márcia (Rita Blanco) works as cook in Helder’s restaurant, who plans to marry with. She shares cramped quarters with her two young-adult children and her sister Ivete. Her daughter Cláudia shows promise in her nursing studies, but her son Joca is a delinquent with a suspicious supply of cash. Her hopes for her daughter’s future are thrown into turmoil, however, when Cláudia announces she’s having a relationship with a married professor, an admission that brings out the specter of Márcia’s own past. Márcia is determined to bring the affair to an end, even if it means compromising her cherished relationship with Cláudia. In her late thirties and yearning for companionship, Ivete loves her family and has a soft spot for her nephew Joca, despite his frequent brushes with the law. When a notorious drug dealer discovers Joca has tried to cheat him, the latter turns to Ivete, the only person who will bail him out. The fallout from the incident has perilous consequences for them both.

The bitch is called Maria and she is a sweet child. She has no father and does not like her mother. She has a boyfriend who is a bandit who would like to change his class.
There are two more bandits: a very tall singer and a guy from Oporto who is a very short and a full of life’s experiences. Neither of these two do much thinking, one even less than the other.
The bitch’s mother is a rich lady who has a lover who is not a handsome boy. All this ends badly because the sweet child plus the boyfriend who wants to change class, with the help of the lover who is a handsome boy, the rich lady who is the mother of the bitch, and against the advice of the guy from Oporto who does not do much thinking, kill a theatre caretaker who didn’t know he was doing there.
However, in the middle of this story the husband of Maria’s mother appears and things get really serious.

Even by his own often eccentric standards, this absurdist comedy finds Botelho (Hard Times, Three Palms) in high spirits, merrily resurrecting the spirit of Buñuel with a series of very loosely linked surreal episodes. Anti-clericalism is rife, but there’s also a good deal of fun at the expense of the nouveaux riches, and the old rich too. It’s shot in saturated Day-Glo reds and blues, and that’s just the wigs. Genuinely bizzare.

Biography

Following graduation from the Escola de Cinema at Portugal’s Conservatorio Nacional in 1976, João Botelho is best known for his internationally acclaimed adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel Hard Times, Tempos Dificeis (1987). Botelho became interested in film while studying engineering. He abandoned engineering studies to attend film school, and shortly after graduation found occasional work as a graphic artist and film critic, as well as founding a short-lived film magazine. Botelho made his directorial debut with the documentary Um Projecto de Educação/A Project for Popular Education, which he co-helmed with Jorge Alves da Silva. He directed his first solo effort, Conversa Acabada/The Conversation Is Over, in 1981. For Tempos Dificeis, Botelho received prizes from the 1987 Venice Film Festival. In 1994, Botelho was commissioned to make a film about Portugal’s most famous city, Lisbon, to celebrate its designation as a European capital of culture. The film was part of a trilogy, each one depicting part of a typical day in Lisbon. Botelho’s film Tres Palmieras covered the hours of six a.m. to two p.m. and was comprised of a series of interesting short vignettes. In a place where everything is bought and sold even the youngest daughter may have to be offered for prostitution to make up for a deal that went terribly wrong. “Noite Escura” deals with the emotions of a small family that runs a provincial whorehouse, having to sell their youngest in order to survive.
