Dino, the charming and lecherous Las Vegas singer, stops for gas on his way to Hollywood in Climax, Nevada. The oily gas station attendant is Barney Millsap, a would-be lyricist who writes pop songs with Orville Spooner, the local piano teacher. By disabling Dino’s car, Barney contrives a scheme to have Dino sing one of their songs on an upcoming TV special. To entertain Dino, Barney contacts the village tart, Polly, employing her to pretend to be Orville’s wife, Zelda, for a night. She doesn’t like Dino, but does love being Orville’s surrogate wife. Dino goes to a bar, where he meets the real Zelda, and they spend the night together while Polly spends it with Orville.

Barbara is a very rich girl who falls in love with Norman Phiffier, a poor young man. She doesn’t tell him who she really is and prepares to marry him. But, Mrs. Tuttle (Barbara’s mother) doesn’t want her daughter to mary such a poor man. So, she hires Norman at one of her big stores, and gives him the most difficult and disgusting works. She hopes that seeing Norman humiliated, Barbara will finally leave him. But things don’t work exactly this way…

This is one of the all time comedy greats. Jerry Lewis plays a guy who can do nothing right, (to the extreme). Jerry plays a young man who wants to make something of himself so he can marry the girl of his dreams. Jill St. John is wonderful as the girl of his affection.

I can’t say enough about John McGiver. He plays the “milk toast”, Mr. Tuttle. I’ve seen him in a number of fun films and he always gives a strong performance. His wife, who wore the pants, was played by Hollywood legend, Agnes Moorehead. She gave a strong performance in this film. She was simply wonderful. The things she puts Jerry up to are extremely over the top! Very funny.

I was to young to see this film when it came out. However as a child I can remember seeing it on television. I can remember my dad falling out of his chair and rolling on the floor in laughter. I remember joining him on the floor and finding it hard to breath because I was laughing so hard. My mom was hitting the side of her chair and screaming. You can’t buy memories like that. I truly believe Jerry Lewis was the best comic of his time. For that matter, Our time.

Jerry Lewis is a true comic who isn’t afraid to be the butt of every joke. That’s what separates great comics from the rest. People like Jack Benny, Phyllis Diller,George Burns, The Three Stooges and on and on. It wasn’t about them, It was about laughter.

If you want to take a break from the stress of life, if just for a moment, and simply enjoy a little nuttiness for the sake of nuttiness, this is the film for you.

A semi-fictionalized version of John Resko’s incarceration is presented. John is on death row at Sing Sing for murder. In December 1930, he killed a toy store shopkeeper over a teddy bear he wanted to get as a Christmas present for his two year old daughter, Cathy, but for which he could not pay. Twenty minutes before John’s scheduled execution, he is given a reprieve, his sentence commuted to life, and he transferred to Dannemora. He initially has a difficult time adjusting to life at Dannemora, from the uncaring direction of the prison administration including they not dealing with the issue of bed bugs, to altercations with fellow prisoners who seem to want their two pounds of literal and figurative flesh from John, to news that he receives from the outside about goings-on within his family.
