Otakar Vávra turned to Mrštík’s love novel, which had already served in the silent era as a model for the famous film of the same name by Karel Anton starring Ji?í Voskovec, again in 1940. Vávra concentrated on capturing the simple poetry of young love in the midst of springtime nature untouched by civilisation. The unrealism of the nature shots was the artistic intention. Vávra and his cinematographer Pe?enka did not make a film about May nature, but about the fairy tale of May nature. Therefore, Pe?enka deliberately used strange and, to that extent, unusual camerawork techniques in Czech cinema: he shot with special filters or on special infrared material, thus achieving the impression of immateriality. In the main roles, Nataša Gollová and Svatopluk Beneš were very successful, both of them managing to imbue their characters with a certain charm of naturalness and actorly shyness. Vávra’s Fairytale of May is an exceptionally strong piece of cinema, also thanks to the cinematographic ingenuity of Ferdinand Pe?enka and the impressive music of Ji?í Srnka. It is a true fairy tale of youth and an elixir of life, laced with the May scent of the K?ivoklát forests.

The time is the seventeenth century. The beggar Maryna Schuchová hides the Host in her scarf at the Communion. She admits to the parish priest Schmidt that she intended to give it to the midwife Groerová to heal her ailing cow. The young priest declares her a witch and convinces the Sumperk countess De Galle to summon the inquisitor Boblig from Edelstadt. This failed student of law sees the offer as a great opportunity. He uses torture and threats to force the women from the to testify to their meetings with the devil and learn by heart the lies he has made up for the inquisition tribunal. Boblig accuses the wealthy burghers of witchcraft as well, and so wants to seize their possessions.

Young and stunningly beautiful Hana is thrown into the street after her mother catches her stepfather sexually harassing Hana. She finds a new job at a café where she becomes the object of lust for her new boss and the sleazy male customers. Hana, who is still repulsed by men, rejects their offers and expensive gifts. She later falls in love with a young composer Pavel but he soon falls seriously ill and only an expensive medical treatment can save him. Czech filmmaker Otakar Vavra truly came into his own with his third feature, Guild of the Kutna Hora Virginas, released in the U.S. as The Merry Wives. Though the title was toned down for American consumption, the censors still found fault with the storyline, which concerns a bon vivant (Zdanek Stepanek) who fools around with all available women, especially those who are already married. The hardly exemplary protagonist manages to become a hero by exposing a nest of crooks operating in his community. Much screen time is expended upon Adina Matlova as the town trollop, who turns out to be the most likeable character in the film. Though it earned an award at the Venice Film Festival, The Merry Wives was banned in Czechoslovakia when the Nazis came to power.

1419: The atmosphere in Prague after Hus’ death is very tense. Several rebels are prisoned and radical priest Jan Zelivský leads large masses of people to the Old Town’s council house occupied by corrupt councillors, where the prisoners are kept. The councillors refuse demands lodged by Zelivský and several people are killed by stones thrown from windows. This act provokes ennoyance and leads to an overt uprising: the gate of the council house is broken and the councillors are thrown out of windows and killed (the so-called first Prague defenestration). When the king hears about this event, he is enormously upset and dies of heart failure. In the night the queen with courtiers leaves the city. The hussite revolution begins and the rebels elect Jan Zizka as their leader.
