Bora the Gypsy is married to an older woman, and he falls in love with the younger Tissa, who is being offered in marriage by her father, to a young gypsy man. This marriage arrangement is according to custom. Tissa rejects her husband, claiming he is not able to consumate the marriage, and Bora joins her. They get a monk in the mountains to marry them. Unable to return to the Gypsy camp, Tissa tries to reach Belgrad on her own, but a couple of truck drivers rape her, and she does return in misery to her tribe. Meanwhile, Bora defends his honour the traditional way, in a knife duwl, and kills his opponent. Therefore he, too, must leave the tribe.

A young man Ivan travels in a carriage, and stops to rest in a remote castle somewhere in the lowlands. The castle is considered by locals to be haunted. The coachman doesn’t want to carry on, so Ivan continues his journey by foot. A young kid who passes by tells Ivan about the castle, but the next minute the carriage kills him. Sibylle, a beautiful but strange woman comes out of the carriage and helps Ivan to carry the dead kid into the castle, which turns out to be her home. After her husband’s death, Sybille lives there only with her coachman Bartholomew. Upon his arrival, Ivan starts to hear strange music coming from unknown place. Ivan and Sibylle fall in love with each other, but the mystery of music is yet to be find out.

As a painter in the court of King Carlos IV, Goya – played by the great Lithuanian actor Donatas Banionis (The Red Tent, Solaris) – has attained wealth and reputation. He believes in King and Church, yet he is also a Spaniard who dearly loves his people.

This contradiction presents him with a dilemma. Based on Lion Feuchtwanger’s novel, Goya is one of ten East German films originally shot in 70mm. This release is the director’s cut and shows the influence of great filmmakers from Buñuel and Saura, to Eisenstein. Goya was nominated for the Golden Prize at the 1971 Moscow International Film Festival.

Having attained boundless wealth and iconic status as a painter in the court of King Carlos IV, Goya falls head over heels for a beautiful princess while becoming increasingly separated from the suffering of the Spanish people. Upon hearing singer Maria Rosario sing revolutionary ballads in a Madrid tavern, however, the detached artist finds becomes better acquainted with the popular singer while growing more reflective than ever before. Later, when Marie is brought before the Inquisition, Goya is invited to witness her trial and becomes acutely aware of the dangers he should face should he be bold enough to follow her example and stray from the official path. Over time Goya finds himself unable to resist the temptation to leave the castle and reconnect with the common people, a daring action that fuels his creativity while simultaneously highlighting his disloyalty in the eyes of the Inquisition.
