Ventriloquist Jerry Morgan has to see another love affair fail. The reason: when the relationship reaches the point when it is time to discuss marriage, his doll Clarence becomes mean and jealous. His fiancée Audrey leaves him and Jerry smashes his two dolls, Clarence and Terrence. Morgan’s doll maker Papinek is a member of a spy ring who has stolen secret plans to the top secret Lafayette airplane. Since Morgan is leaving for Zurich the same night, Papinek decides to use Morgan’s dolls as a mailbox and hides the secret plans in the heads of the dolls. Another secret spy ring also wants to get their hands on Jerry’s luggage and they *also* follow him. Eventually, Jerry is chased by both these organizations as well as the police, who suspects him of murder.

Sam Smith is forced to move into the run down Flushing, New York house of his entertainment business partner Ernest Grey after they are evicted from their offices for making pornographic movies and losing all their money and equipment in the process. Ernie originally bought the house on Sam’s ill-advice of the property soon being expropriated for a highway, which never happened. Further adding to the house’s lack of appeal is that it is located next to a cemetery. Strictly Dishonorable is a musicalized version of Preston Sturges’ cynical Broadway comedy of the same title, previously filmed sans songs in 1931. Ezio Pinza, fresh from his stage triumph in South Pacific , stars as Augustino Caraffa, an opera star whose amorous adventures are legend. Janet Leigh plays green-as-grass Southern belle Isabelle Perry, Caraffa’s biggest fan. To rescue her idol from a vengeful publisher (Hugh Sanders), Isabelle agrees to an “in name only” marriage, hoping that Caraffa will eventually fall in love with her for real. Several romantic complications later, Caraffa finally begins to change his rakish ways. In keeping with Sturges’ original scenario, Strictly Dishonorable is set in the late 1920s, allowing for a scene in which Isabelle is amorously inspired by a silent John Gilbert – Greta Garbo picture (accompanied on the Mighty Wurlitzer by organist Kathleen Freeman).
