Kurotokage (1962, aka Black Lizard) has its origins in a 1934 detective novel – originally published as a magazine serial – by Edogawa Rampo, the pen name of writer Taro Hirai. (“Edogawa Rampo” was meant to mimic the pronunciation of “Edgar Allan Poe,” a writer Hirai greatly admired.) The novel was one of a series that Rampo wrote about the exploits of detective Akechi Kogoro; in this one, he meets his match in a master jewel thief and femme fatale named Black Lizard, with whom he engages in a cat-and-mouse story as he falls under her charms.

Long ago there was a great samurai warrior who served his Shogun honorably. The Shogun however grew paranoid as he became more and more senile. The Shogun sought to destroy all those who might stand to oppose his rule, and so he sent his ninja spies to the samurai’s home. The ninjas failed to kill the samurai, but did kill his beloved wife. From then on, the samurai swore on his honor to seek out the Shogun and avenge the death of his love. The samurai roams the countryside with his toddler son taking on mercenary work for money until the final battle with the Shogun’s three Masters of Death.

I was working for Mark Lindsay at wonderland, when the project fell in his lap. most of the additional soundtrack was performed on a Prophet 5 synthesizer along with a jupiter 8 keyboard. the zings and sound effects as weapons are used was created on a EMU (a wall sized synthe made of individual modules) and was recorded on a Trident flexymix console. Michael Lewis and Mark Lindsay worked so cohesively as if they were one and the same. The working title for one of the longer songs was “chinks in armor”

this movie was banned in 1983 in the USA because of the scene where wet and freezing the three travelers huddle together naked an the little boy flicks the nipples of the fem fatal and the nipple gets hard. fairly risqué for the time.
