The True Story of Lynn Stuart (1958)

When the nephew and his friend of Phyllis Carter are killed in an automobile crash while under the influence of narcotics, she persuades Police Lieutenant Jim Hahan to use her as an undercover agent, despite the fact she is married and has a young son. She is trained to impersonate “Lynn Stuart”, who did time for a bank hold-up, and is given a job at a drive-in restaurant where members of a narcotics gang are known to frequent. She attracts the attention of Willie Down, a mid-level boss in the gang and begins getting information from him which she passes on to the FBI. Her husband, alarmed over the health of their son gets her to promise to quit. Willie takes her to Mexico before she can inform anyone where she is going, where he and a gang henchman murder the driver and guard of a truck transporting dope and hijack the load. Phyllis/Lynn goes to the ladies room of a service station where she scribbles their destination on a mirror using lipstick hoping to be rescued.

Gambler John Merrick (Frank Lovejoy) is the head of a bookie syndicate and the newspaper is crusading against him and the rackets, primarily because Merrick is in love with Felice Stuart (Joan Weldon), daughter of the newspaper publisher who can not break up the romance through persuasion. A senate committee investigating crime gets involved, the racketeers, other than Merrick who is a “nice guy”, strike back and kill a reporter, and Merrick’s own son, Jerry Merrick (Robert Arthur), commits suicide. Merrick, to his own disadvantage, helps bring down the syndicate. Since it is in black-and-white-, deals with crime and was an American-made film, some will call it “film noir” since that seems to be the current guidelines for putting a film in that, at one time limited-and-defined genre. It ain’t, and neither are most of the others currently so classified.

A rebuilt WWII carrier sails back to the Pacific theater to rejoin the war in early 1945, a carrier the Japanese think they sank. So if she shows up again, they will go after her with a vengeance. And they do, nearly destroying her again, ending that mission for her, but she is able to limp back to the states. The captain is tough, he knows the added risk for his ship, but shows he also has a heart by not relieving a pilot of flight duty, one who committed a serious mistake by not taking a wave-off as instructed. Lot of action shots, many appearing to be actual war footage. The usual character sub-stories. Partly plays like a documentary about the navy, and the carrier in particular. Maybe a bit of a recruiting film also.

Over-Exposed (1956)

This forgettable piece of 1950s sleaze stars Cleo Moore as a voluptuous blonde who becomes a successful commercial photographer. Richard Crenna, making a major break from his TV image as Our Miss Brooks’ Walter Denton, plays a reporter who takes a special interest in Moore’s career. The beauteous picture taker becomes involved in a blackmail plot when she goes to work for a Confidential-type magazine, nearly losing her life to mobsters. It was the opinion of many contemporary reviewers that the title Over-Exposed referred not to the photographs taken by Moore but to the generous amounts of cleavage displayed by the actress’ low cut gowns. Though Cleo Moore has become a “cult” favorite thanks to her appearances in the turgid melodramas directed by Hugo Haas, Over-Exposed demonstrates that her minimal acting talent vanished altogether without Haas’ guiding hand.
