Michael Gordon, star reporter with a nose for trouble, is heading home after completing a difficult assignment in Iraq. On a Damascus stopover he relays a tip to a fellow American newsman who subsequently ends up in a local camel market with a knife in his back. Even though everyone, including the American legation, seems to want Gordon to leave the country, he feels obliged to find his friend’s murderer. Among the red herrings he must sort through in the “World’s Oldest City” are an informing card cheat, a beautiful femme fatale, an enigmatic hotel owner, a Frenchman with two aliases, and several sinister Arabs. In short order, Gordon foils Nazi plots to unite the Arab tribes against the Allies and help the Germans seize the Suez Canal.

During WW1, a train is stopped by a bombing ;a young soldier ,Paul,takes advantage of the opportunity to go to his native village to see his parents. His sergeant has given him one hour.He meets his mother in the church and learns that his fiancee does not live with her anymore.She’s working in a tavern for soldiers where the owner,Auguste ,woos her.The former love does not want to see Paul anymore because he never wrote to her since he left for war.In fact,it’s Paul mother who has concealed the messages:she has turned her out of the house because she does not want a girl in state custody to be her daughter-in-law .Auguste is jealous and wants the Gendarmes to arrest Paul as a deserter.After another bombing ,Auguste is buried beneath the ruins of his cafe.Paul gets on the moving train in the nick of time.Marie will wait for him.

Beautiful Mary returns to her small hometown after many years from Chicago wearing a mink coat and carrying an expensive cigarette case. Her arrival causes long standing enmities to surface between two of her old boyfriends, Kenny Veech, a loafing gambler, and debonair Lew Lentz, owner of a local nightclub. Their deep-seated animosity repeatedly results in antagonism and fights as they compete for Mary’s affections. Kenny’s friend Gitlo, a bartender in Lentz’ club, enlists Kenny in an aborted plan to rob Lentz of $15,000 in profits from sponsoring a local carnival. Lentz retaliates by framing both men for murder.
