On November 25th 1970, a man committed ritual suicide inside the Tokyo headquarters of the Japanese Ministry of Defence, leaving behind a legacy of masterpieces and a controversy that echoes to this day. The man was Yukio Mishima, one of Japan’s greatest and most celebrated novelists. With four members of his own private army – the Tatenokai – Mishima had taken the commandant hostage and called upon the assembled military outside the Ministry to overthrow their society and restore the powers of the Emperor. When the soldiers mocked and jeered Mishima, he cut short his speech and withdrew to the commandant’s office where he committed seppuku – the samurai warrior’s death – tearing open his belly with a ceremonial knife before being beheaded by one of his colleagues. What was Mishima truly trying to express through his actions? And what did he witness during his final moments?

Shingu, a coastal village in Wakayama Prefecture, early 20th century. Many years later, on her deathbed, Oryu recalls the stories of three young men of the Nakamoto family. First, there was the adult Hanzo (Kora Kengo) who, after being abandoned by Tomi when he was five, was raised by distant relatives and friends. He was sent to work in the steel mills of Osaka after being discovered in an affair with a married woman, Kane. Finally he returned home, with a wife, Yukino, but found he couldn’t escape the “curse”. Then, after WW2, there was his cousin, Kuwahara Miyoshi (Takaoka Sosuke), a drug-taking layabout and womaniser, who joined up with two thieves to rob a house. And finally, there was Tatsuo (Sometani Shota), Miyoshi’s cousin.

Filmed entirely in a desolate field, Violent Virgin opens with two cars travelling along a dusty road. Three men and three women, apparently members of a gang, have a couple bound and blindfolded. After they reach their demonstration, they drag the man and woman, whose names we soon learn are Hoshi and Hanako, out of the cars and dump them on the ground. It seems that Hanako was the boss’s girl, but she eloped with Hoshi. Captured, it seems that they are going to be murdered, but not before they are humiliated by the other gang members.

Their clothes are eventually stripped off and Hanako is tied to a cross. Hoshi is informed that the big boss has ordered that he be made into the “boss” for the day. The male members of the gang refer to Hoshi as “boss” and each of the female members intend to have sex with him before he is killed. However, Hoshi strangles the first prostitute and runs. After this, things really begin to become bizarre.
